With a quite, “BING” the elevator shuddered to a stop and the doors quietly opened. Lucifer stepped out, followed by Fear and Pride.
He watched the young man put his hand on the brass door and pause. Lucifer read Adan like a book. He could not read Adan’s mind, but he knew enough about this man who his thoughts were are clear as day.
He is nervous.
“Fear!”, let’s tempt that nervousness into fear. Sound like fun?”
Fear followed Adan as he slipped through the door.
Adan wandered around the courtyard, first to the Lock, then to the doors, then all around. Adan bowed his head for a moment and Fear took the chance…he flipped the black hat off his own head and leaned forward to place it on Adan’s head.
Adan snapped his head and swirled around, obviously sensing a nearby presence…but Fear could not be seen with human eyes. In a moment, Adan lowered his head once more in thought.
Fear leaned forward again to slip the hat on Adan’s head. The hat drew close and Adan looked increasingly agitated. At the moment the hat touched Adan, a small light from somewhere on the opposite wall fell upon Adan’s chest and Adan instantly relaxed.
Fear shrank back at the presence of that small beam of Light. It was the same kind of light he had just experienced in the presence of God. Lucifer had read Adan’s quietness for nervousness…but it was a moment of prayer instead!
With shocked dismay, Fear watched as Adan relaxed and then smiled as the Lock ceased its constant shape-shifting and became the simple mechanism Fear knew all too well.
And then it opened.
